5 Simple Tips For An Energy Efficient Home

June 7, 2019

An energy efficient home is a home that focuses on reducing unnecessary energy consumption including electricity, water, and other energy resources.

Energy Efficient Home

Not only does it reduce your utility bills and save you money, but making your home energy efficient also benefits the environment and creates a healthy living condition for you and your family. Here are five ways to conserve energy and make your house an energy efficient home.

1. Choose LED and dimmable light bulbs

Using energy efficient lighting in your house is one of the easiest ways to cut your energy bills. The most common choices of light bulbs are halogen incandescents, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Although energy efficient light bulbs cost more upfront, their high efficiency and long lifetime will save you much more in the long run.

Upgrading to dimmable lighting systems is also a great way to reduce your power bills. Because you can adjust the bulbs’ brightness depending on your needs and time of day, you will be able to lower your household’s electricity usage.

2. Switch to low flow shower heads

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American household consumes more than 300 gallons of water per day. 20 percent of this water usage goes to showering. Switching to low flow shower heads (marked by EPA WaterSense label) will help conserve water and reduce water bills.

3. Install programmable or smart thermostats

A programmable thermostat allows you to efficiently manage the energy usage of your home. For example, you can program the thermostat to automatically turn on and turn off the heater or air-conditioner at a specific time, such as when you’re away or asleep. On average, having a programmable or smart thermostat at home can save you $180 a year.

4. Purchase energy efficient appliances

In most American households, a hefty amount of energy is used to power appliances. Therefore, replacing old household appliances with energy efficient models that utilize minimum energy to complete required tasks will result in significant savings on both energy and money.

5. Go solar – Install Solar Panels

Installing solar panels seems like a huge investment up front but it can completely eliminate or drastically reduce your electric bills. Plus, going solar benefits the environment by conserving energy and limit carbon footprints.
