How Do Panels Work?

As you may already know, solar-powered homes get their energy from the sun. But how do panels convert sunlight into energy that can power a building? The process only takes 3 simple steps:

Sunlight is absorbed by solar panels

Solar panels are comprised of several small units called photovoltaic cells. These cells link together to create a single panel which “captures” the sunlight your system will use to power your home. 

Inverters convert sunlight into energy

Once sunlight is absorbed by your panels, inverters activate to turn sunlight into usable electricity. This is what powers your home.

Energy is used, distributed, or stored

Any unused energy created by your system is sent to your utility company’s grid, earning you credits from them and lowering your energy bill. If your system includes a storage battery, your excess energy is stored there instead and can power your home during a community wide blackout.
